Update

Unfortunately, Tarkine Trails has requested we no longer recommend this hike due to issues with insurance, permits etc. Please contact them for any further information.

There don’t seem to be any good alternatives for multiday trips in the tarkine, but hopefully this book by Bob Brown will be out soon.

  1. Great track report guys. I now have enough info to do this myself, in the way and timing I want. And for the cost I want! Pity you had to be bullied into taking info down by others essentially wanting to “lock up” anything good in our state of Tassie for themselves! I can read between the lines! I do wish these private bodies success, but not at the expense of trying to stop other knowledgeable people spreading some joy around. Cheers.

  2. Any ideas what they mean by issues with permits? I’m planning to do this hike this year, and given it was described in the Tarkine Trails book without any reference to a requirement for permits, I was assuming none is required – or is it issues with their commercial permits and the fact they have been providing info to other walkers?

  3. Hi Guys,

It’s great to hear that you are you looking to venture into the incredible takayna/Tarkine rainforest – the more people who experience this ancient rainforest in a respectful and environmentally conscious way, the better!

There was some confusion back in 2015 in relation to permits and licensing which have now been rectified, and we apologies for any issues that this may have caused – we definitely don’t want to turn people away from the takayna/Tarkine. The campsites themselves were leased, yet the trail was not – we have since stopped running tours on this track, where Tarkine Wilderness Experiences is now running guided walks along this trail. We therefore recommend that you touch base with them to check what the arrangements are, as things may have changed when it comes to licences and leases, since we last ran these walks. Either way, we do hope you have a wonderful time in this ancient landscape!

    Warm regards,
    Tarkine Trails
